The rationale for the Seminar

Our era, in which social and sexual behaviours quite different from those in the recent past are taking hold, seems to take a particular interest in perverse behaviour and lifestyles, what psychiatry today calls “paraphiliac”. And yet in Italy, the theme of perversions has been very little debated, despite its being one of psychoanalysis’ strong points, insofar as it alone has attempted an etiological explanation. Even if theories on perversion vary according to the analytic school.  This seminar aims to engage a discussion around this theme between psychoanalysts and academics who, while inspired by psychoanalysis, come from different fields, which should result in a lively debate. We will discuss the perverse entity in terms of mental structure, the problems it poses to diagnostics, as well as the turmoil surrounding it. We will attempt to situate the place of perverse acts within the general field of psychoanalytic theory, but also to reconstruct the perverse form of life in its dramatic concreteness, and to reflect on the very sense of the concept of “perversions” in relation to the current changes in sexual customs and morals in industrialised countries.
